Recently, following a short illness, we lost our ever smiling and patient foreman and mentor Anna Roas. She was a founding member of Lawrence Heath’s new side Fleur de Lys back in 1976 when Roy Dommett came along to teach stave dancing, and she continued to teach new and old Fleurs members with endless good cheer and patience, passing on her knowledge of Morris traditions, and helping to form new Farncombe traditions that have shaped Fleurs style. Anna was a small person with a big heart and an endless vitality and energy, she will be massively missed by her friends, church, and local community, and Fleurs will forever have an Anna shaped hole in our line up.
Come and have a taster session as a dancer or musician with a friendly, inclusive, mixed side.
Fleurs practice on a Tuesday evening September – April at the United Church, Bridge Rd, Godalming GU7 3DT 7.45pm – 9.45pm, we dance out in pub gardens throughout the summer. Morris dancing is great fun, and provides members with fitness skills and a great social life, every season brings a full calendar of event dancing, pub sessions and weekend folk festivals. ABOUT US
FLEUR DE LYS MORRIS were set up during the folk revival in 1976, we dance Stave, Cotswold and some Border dances. Our emblem the Fleur de Lys or Lily flower, is one possible origin for the name of our County town Guildford ‘The Golden Ford’ referring to the Yellow and Purple Flag Irises that grew around the marshy fords, our kit reflects those vibrant colours. We dance Stave dances (back in the day taught to us by Roy Dommett), based on the processional steps of The Friendly Societies, along with Cotswold and Border styles, we also have our own Farncombe Tradition music and dances.
You will find us out and about all through the year, dancing at various local Pubs, Fetes and Town events, as well as further afield at Folk Festivals, so see you there!
We can be booked for private events, Fetes, Parties, Weddings, so if you are looking for something a bit different, get in touch to ask about our rates.
